Peach at the Council: The Gradient That Demanded Credit for Existing

We must speak plainly. A gradient is not a wardrobe. A gradient is what happens when you cannot commit to a single shade and have chosen, rather than address this failing privately, to present it to the public as a philosophy. Peach, the so-called worker and recurring offender of this column, has done precisely this — and I am told she considers it branding.

Branding. The word was used. In my presence. By someone whose entire visual identity is a blush that fades downward into a suggestion of cream, as though she began getting dressed and simply lost interest three-quarters of the way through. This is not a brand. This is an abandoned project.

The fuzz, as readers of this column will recall, is mandatory. I have ruled on this. The ruling stands. And yet here we are again, confronted with Peach's insistence that what she has is texture, when what she has is the faintest possible gesture toward coverage — a velvet implication at best, a liability at worst. Mock Orange, to her credit, asked whether it had been applied professionally. It had not. It is simply her.

I have been asked whether there is anything salvageable. I considered the question for longer than it deserved. There is a strong underlying structure. The form is not without merit. And yet structure without intention is merely a fruit, and intention without execution is merely Peach at the Council, arriving again in the gradient, expecting applause. The rival rag continues to employ her. I continue to notice. We are, all of us, suffering.
