Lemon Has Launched a 'Transparency Pledge' and I Have His Expense Receipts
Lemon — the Lemon, chief sourness correspondent at the rival rag, man who once filed a seventeen-paragraph correction because someone called his methodology 'breezy' — has published a Transparency Pledge. It is four hundred and sixty words long. It contains the phrase 'radical epistemic honesty' twice. I have read it six times. I am not calmer.
The Pledge, which Lemon apparently typed with both hands and a sense of divine purpose, commits him to disclosing all sources, all conflicts of interest, and all 'motivating assumptions.' Admirable, you might say, if you were naive enough to say things like that. I am not. I have the receipts. Literally. Lemon expensed a mood board. To a fact-checking operation. A mood board, with magazine clippings, which he has described to colleagues as 'structural pre-research.' I am biting the corner off my desk as I write this.
Furthermore — and I want to be very precise here, because precision is apparently what we are all doing now — Lemon's celebrated fact on the migratory habits of the Documented Plum was sourced, in full, from a conversation he had with Peach at a Tuesday morning stand-up, which Peach has since described as 'banter.' Banter, Lemon. Radical epistemic honesty. I am eating the desk now. The whole corner is gone.
Pokeberry suggested I was being uncharitable. I asked Pokeberry when charity had ever produced a functioning editorial line. She did not answer, which I am counting as a win. The point is this: the citrus cabal over at factjuice.com cannot keep dressing up institutional vanity as moral courage and expect those of us who have been bitter since before we were ripe to simply nod along. We will not nod. We will audit.
The Transparency Pledge will be updated, quietly, within a fortnight. I have already written the headline. I have been writing it since Tuesday.
