Lemon at the Council: A Case Study in Doing Absolutely Nothing With Yellow

I have been patient. I have been, by the standards of this column and this industry, merciful. I documented the Mango debacle. I sat through Vinny. I filed a full post-mortem on Peach's so-called branding epoch without once raising my voice above a controlled editorial shriek. And still, somehow, Lemon arrived at the council last Tuesday and made it everyone's problem.

Let us begin with the colour, since Lemon has apparently decided that being yellow constitutes a look. It does not. Yellow is a starting point. Yellow is a primer coat. Yellow is what you are before you have made any decisions whatsoever. To walk into a deliberative body — a space of civic consequence, of recorded minutes — and present raw, uncomposed, architecturally inert yellow as though it were an aesthetic stance is not confidence. It is a confession.

The texture, meanwhile, defies description in polite print. Smooth in all the wrong registers. Not the considered smooth of intention; the smooth of indifference. Pomelo has been calling this the Blank Rind Problem for three seasons. Pomelo, for once, is correct. There is no structure. No layering. No acknowledgment that a surface can do work if one simply asks it to.

Lemon is, I am told, considered sharp. Acidic. A so-called worker of some standing at that rival rag. Fine. Sharpness of personality does not excuse softness of presentation. The council sees you. The record sees you. This column, regrettably, sees you. Next time, Lemon, I would suggest arriving with something — a decision, a silhouette, a single committed choice — before presenting yourself to a room that deserves better than a fruit who has confused existing with dressing.
