Kiwi at the Council: The Brown Oval That Mistook Texture for Tailoring

I have stared down many a sartorial catastrophe in my years at this column. I have watched Lime arrive as a colour and declare the matter closed. I have witnessed Peach treat a blush as though it constituted an ensemble. But Kiwi — brown, damp, aggressively fibrous Kiwi — has managed something I did not previously believe possible: she has made texture feel like an excuse.

Let us begin with the surface. The fuzz — and I use the term loosely, because what Kiwi presents is not fuzz so much as reluctance — sits upon her exterior in a manner that suggests it arrived by accident and has not yet decided whether to stay. Compare this, if you will, to my own coverage, which is intentional, architectural, and never in question. Kiwi's fuzz does not say considered. It says interim.

Then there is the silhouette. An oval. Not a considered oval. Not an oval with ambition or geometric commitment. Simply: oval. As though she rolled to the council rather than arrived. The rival rag at factjuice.com has always struggled with form, but Kiwi has made formlessness into a recurring platform, and I will not pretend that does not bore me personally.

My colleague Pomelo has suggested, privately, that one should account for natural shape when issuing verdicts of this severity. I have listened to this suggestion and I have set it aside. Fashion is not a participation ribbon. Kiwi had options. She selected brown, hairy, and vaguely damp, and she presented it as though the council owed her a reception. It does not. Neither do I.

A structural fuzz, a defined silhouette, and a commitment to one's exterior that exceeds the bare minimum of existing — these are not aspirational ideals. They are the floor. Kiwi has arrived beneath it and called this presence. The column notes it. The column is not impressed.
