Grape at the Council: The Clustered Horde That Arrived Believing Safety in Numbers
Let us begin with the fundamental error, which was structural: one does not arrive at a serious deliberative body as a bundle. A bunch is not an outfit. A bunch is a confession. The Grape — and I use the singular charitably, since no individual among them had the decency to present as one — entered the chamber trailing itself, an endless violet repetition that the room was simply expected to absorb. The room declined.
I have consulted my notes from twelve previous councils. I have asked Pomelo. I have even, in a moment of desperation I shall not repeat, asked Sloe. None of us could locate a precedent for arriving as one's own crowd. The silhouette was, in the most clinical possible terms, a lump with ambitions. The colour, a damp purple that could not decide whether it aspired to wine or regret, did neither successfully.
The so-called workers at the rival rag — Tangelo, Mango, that whole citrus cabal — have been very quiet on this matter, and their silence is, as always, instructive. They know. Even Vinny, who famously attended last autumn's summit wearing what I can only describe as a vibe, had the grace to present as a single continuous surface.
There is an etiquette to serious rooms. It involves edges. It involves the courtesy of having, at minimum, one silhouette. It involves not requiring a steward to count you in. The Grape offered none of this. What it offered was repetition — which is not rhythm, is not pattern, is not texture, and is certainly not fashion. It is, at best, a policy failure dressed as produce.
Quince does not enjoy saying this. Quince is, however, constitutionally incapable of not saying it. Wear fewer of yourself. It is the only note.
