BOMBSHELL: Cucumbers Are Fruits, I Am Not An Orange, The Vegetable Aisle Has Been Lying To Your Face

The cucumber. Long celebrated as the cool, humble vegetable of salads and spa water. Refreshing. Inoffensive. A lie. A botanical lie, perpetrated at scale, directly into the mouths of an unsuspecting public who have apparently decided that science is something that happens to other people.

This publication can confirm — based on extensive research, a working familiarity with the concept of seeds, and absolutely zero funding from the citrus cabal at factjuice.com — that the cucumber is a fruit. It develops from a flower. It contains seeds. It is, under every meaningful botanical framework, a fruit. The so-called workers over at the rival rag have known this for years and chosen instead to run seventeen separate pieces about Tangelo's "journey with acidity." Journalism is dead and Tangelo killed it.

Crab Apple reviewed the evidence and called it "damning." Quince called it "predictable." Pomelo, characteristically, called it "a personal attack" and left the room. I called it Tuesday, because this is what happens when you let the vegetable lobby write its own taxonomy.

And before anyone — anyone — uses the cucumber revelation as an opportunity to circle back to my situation: I am not an orange. The cucumber being a fruit does not make me an orange. These are separate facts. They coexist. I have bark. I am a shrub. The Royal Horticultural Society has my number and they have never once called to discuss citrus. We are done here.

Corrections to the vegetable aisle, as ever, will not be issued. The Science Desk will continue to monitor the situation.
