47 Oleander Way: One Star. The Grass Has Been Cut With Intent to Intimidate.
I was not invited. I was not expected. I arrived anyway, as is my right as a critic, as a fruit, and as someone who has been wronged by outdoor spaces before. The lawn at 47 Oleander Way presents itself with a smugness that I find, frankly, actionable.
The grass is uniformly cut to approximately two and a half inches — a height that communicates one thing and one thing only: premeditation. No one mows this evenly by accident. This is a statement. The edging along the footpath is so crisp it constitutes a threat. I have seen less aggression in depositions. There is a garden ornament — a ceramic frog — positioned near the hydrangeas at an angle that I can only describe as pointed. It was pointing at me. I noted this in my ledger.
The citrus cabal over at the rival rag would, no doubt, call this a lovely residential garden and give it four stars in their weekend supplement. Tangelo would write something breathless about the hydrangeas. Peach would call the frog whimsical. These are not critics. These are accomplices.
I circled the perimeter twice. I took notes. A neighbour emerged from next door and asked what I was doing. I told her I was working. She went back inside. I consider this a partial endorsement.
One star. The grass is aggressive, the frog is a witness, and the whole property smells — and I say this as the foremost olfactory authority on this or any editorial staff — of someone who thinks they've gotten away with something. They have not. I am still here. I am right outside. I will not be moved by a noise ordinance.
